Washington State has a Funded Project! Thanks to the efforts of long-time NEMO supporter Jim Bolger of Washington Sea Grant and the new Coastal Communities Development Program (see below) Washington NEMO should be up and running within the year. Ohio NEMO has Death Sentence Commuted. In a tense last minute reversal the Ohio NEMO Program, housed in Ohio State University's Cooperative Extension System, was given a 2-year funding extension. This leaves Coordinator Timothy Lawrence to grow the program to even greater heights. Congratulations Tim!

Duluth: a Winter Vacation Destination? John and Jim give a hearty thumbs-up to a February get-away in America's frozen north. Thanks to the organizational efforts of the Metro-NEMO program and the Lake Superior Basin NEMO Program, with funding support from the MN DNR, the National NEMO team had two very successful workshops. Read more about these events in the April edition of the MN Sea Grant publication, the Seiche (URL below). J & J are now looking to book a summer workshop in Death Valley or environs...

NEMO U-2 has been set for October 22-24 in Charleston, South Carolina. Mark your calendars! Look for more info soon. NEMO Principals Pen Award-winning Article
Chet Arnold, Sandy Prisloe, and remote sensing guru Dan Civco took 1st place for the "ESRI Award for Best Scientific Paper in Geographic Information Systems" at the American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (say that quickly five times!). The paper, which will be placed on the NEMO website soon, is entitled "Remote-Sensing-Enhanced Outreach Education as a Decision Support System for Local Land-Use Officials". Says Arnold, "The first half of the paper that I wrote is clear and understandable, the last half, authored by Sandy and Dan and for which we won the award, is still being transcribed by cryptographers in Washington." Reprints are available on request. The award came with a $500 cash prize, split among the 5 authors. Arnold is using his $100 for private speech lessons so that he can learn to pronounce "photogrammetry." Prisloe is buying more shrimp (picture).
The Coastal Communities Development Program is a Reality. This new initiative within the Sea Grant program is broad in scope, but NEMO is mentioned specifically as an example of one type of program that would be eligible for funding. State Sea Grant Directors will need to report to the National Sea Grant office by June 15th with a plan of how to use the $50K/year coming to this program. If you are a Sea Grant-based program or Sea Grant is one of your partners, contact your Sea Grant Directorand gently inquire about his/her plans for the CCDP and if it could be used to help support your program. Remember, this funding is intended to be every year for the foreseeable future.
